"French Moderns" Exhibit Opens At The Figge

The much-anticipated traveling exhibit "French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850-1950" makes its debut at the Figge Art Museum this week, opening to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The 60 works come from the Brooklyn Museum's collection, and are divided by subject into four themes: landscape, still life, portraits and figures, and nude. Perhaps the biggest draw in this exhibit is the work of Impressionist icons, including Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Degas, and Manet. The installation also features other artistic movements of the era: Realism, Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. While "French Moderns" isn't the biggest exhibit in terms of volume of work to come to the museum, Figge curatorial assistant Joshua Johnson says it is the biggest in terms of stature and artistic significance.
